Félix Marie Henri Tilkin.

Born Liège, 12 May 1861.

Died New York City, 29 November 1921.

Belgian composer and conductor.

Ivan Caryll was one of the most successful composers of musical comedy both in Britain and the USA, while also having success in Paris and Vienna. He had at least a part in some forty shows, many being collaborative efforts with Lionel Monckton. After moving to New York in 1911, he continued to compose successfully with several colleagues, including Guy Bolton and P G Wodehouse.

He studied at the Liège Conservatoire, with further training in Paris. In 1882 he moved to London, where he soon attracted the attention of George Edwardes, who employed him as musical director at both his theatres, the Gaiety and Lyric.

As a composer, his first great success for Edwardes at the Gaiety was The Shop Girl (1894), which was followed by The Gay Parisienne.
