American soprano.
Gianna d'Angelo trained in New York, under Giuseppe de Luca at the Juilliard, and then in Venice with Toti dal Monte. It was while in Italy that she adopted the professional form of her name, making her debut in 1954 in Rome at the Baths of Caracalla summer season. The role of that debut was Gilda, a part that she sang with great success throughout her career, not just in Italy, but also in Vienna, Paris, Lisbon, San Francisco, New York (Met) and Chicago. She appeared at the Met between 1961 and 1968, also singing Mozart (Queen of Night), Rossini (Rosina), Donizetti (Lucia, Norina), Bellini (Amina) and Strauss (Zerbinetta).
In Britain she worked at Glyndebourne as Rosina (including the 1955 Edinburgh Festival) and Zerbinetta, which followed in 1962. Her only other appearance in Scotland came in 1963, when she was a guest of the San Carlo company in performances of Don Pasquale with Alfredo Kraus.
Her recordings include two of her best known roles, in Il barbiere di Siviglia and Rigoletto, as well as Musetta in the classic La bohème with Renata Tebaldi and Carlo Bergonzi, conducted by Tullio Serafin. Olympia in Les contes d'Hoffmann is in a recording conducted by André Cluytens, with Nicolai Gedda, Victoria de los Angeles and Elisabeth Schwarzkopf.
