Henry Waddington studied in Manchester at the Royal Northern College of Music. He was nominated for Best Male Singer at the International Opera Awards in 2016.

He joined Glyndebourne Touring Opera in 1992, singing Keeper of the Madhouse The Rake's Progress. In 1994 he created Monstrous Messenger and Joe Shady in The Second Mrs Kong (Birtwistle). He also toured as Valens Theodora. His debut at the Glyndebourne Festival was in 1994  as the Keeper. He returned for title role Saul, Hans Foltz Die Meistersinger and Dr Grenvil La traviata.

Roles with Opera North include Bottom, Bartolo Le nozze di Figaro, Baron Ochs and Don Magnifico.  Other appearances in the UK include Garsington (Priest The Cunning Little Vixen) and Buxton (Elmiro in Rossini's Otello).

On the continent he has worked at Stuttgart (Oberlin in Rihm's Jacob Lenz - also at Brussels and Berlin Staatsoper); Barcelona (Pallade Agrippina); Aix-en-Provence (Quince) and Paris Opéra-Comique (Prospero in Miranda).
