This production with its school-centred 1950s era football kit for the boys and gymslips for the girls showed no more depth or understanding of the opera than it had first time round. Fortunately the musical side was excellent, and the cast, recruited to revive an existing staging, just got on with it. The standout performances came from the two Canadians, Rebecca Caine, already familiar as Susanna in the last Figaro revival, and Brett Polegato, another in the stream of excellent baritones from that country, a superb actor and a recent finalist in Cardiff. The tenor Jeremy Ovenden also made an impressive debut. Olivia Keen sang nicely, but seemed least at ease with the production. The Dorabella and Alfonso, company regulars as they were, seemed far happier.
