A surprising aspect of operatic life at this time is the fact that while Mozart was recognised by the Victorians as an undoubted genius, the only operas which were revived with any regularity were Don Giovanni and The Marriage of Figaro. Even The Magic Flute was a great rarity, and the others were completely unknown.
