Alessandro Stradella was very successful at first, and led to the commissioning of Flotow's next opera, Martha, the success of which soon eclipsed it. This production by Carl Rosa was the last occasion on which it was staged in Britain, though it continued to be performed in the German-speaking world until well into the next century. Joseph Maas was a very successful tenor, though he died at a young age.
