On its previous Festival outing in 1969, Combattimento was accompanied by recent music theatre pieces by Alexander Goehr and Iain Hamilton. On this occasion its essentially modern and experimental form was projected in as authentic a manner as was possible musically. The pairing with two very different works of Monteverdi, the Ballo delle ingrate and Sestina also worked well because the works were so different. The sounds and textures produced from the band were fascinating. By performing in English the singers easily held the audience gripped throughout.
