The last production in Scotland by Graham Vick of a Mozart opera had been his controversial Don Giovanni of 1985. This could hardly have been more different - straightforward and elegant, if anything a little bit dull (sorry, there's no pleasing some people). The designs seemed bland - everything was white or off-white, with translucent partitions, everyone eavesdropping, and no secrets in this palace. The cast was consistently good, with excellently chosen young singers, some already familiar, and two established performers who played regularly in Scotland (Anne Mason and Harry Nicoll). The Scottish baritone Iain Paterson was singing his first major role at home. One unusual change was to have Barbarina sing the verse usually performed by the first of the girls in the third act betrothal ceremony.
