Mascagni's follow-up to Cavalleria was a very different piece, which some audience members seem to have preferred - more subtle perhaps. Posterity has decided otherwise, but this cast gave it a good send-off, not only the three principals, but also Pauline Joran, not just an excellent and slender soprano, but an expert violinist. Perhaps that requirement is a reason for the work being a challenge to perform.
