Ravel's wonderfully sly and subversive piece of froth had not been seen in a fully professional staging Scotland since Scottish Opera's only performances in 1963, but it revealed itself to be an ideal vehicle for students - and an excellent companion piece for the Gianni Schicchi staging that followed. Back in 2003 the Academy had done a Ravel double-bill, surely the more obvious solution. But it should be possible to try out a whole series of combinations of one-acters (as Opera North tried for a season in 2004).
