The second visit to Scotland by Glyndebourne Touring Opera (the previous one being in 1971) came to Glasgow, instead of Edinburgh. The two subsequent visits have been to the Edinburgh Festival Theatre.
The staging, originally by Peter Hall, but now directed by Robin Tebbutt, was dazzling, and the performance faultless. Musically, the opera contained a great deal to fascinate and inspire. The text, as wiith much of Tippett's writing, divided opinion. Was it pretentious gibberish, or a beady-eyed comment on the difficult times we live in? Naive, perhaps, but there was certainly enough of quality to make the piece worth a second look. But will we get that chance?
Glyndebourne Tour - 1990
This tour saw a single performance of Peter Hall's naturalistic Fidelio staging, and two performances of the radical rethink of Die Zauberflöte by Peter Sellars. It also brought New Year, the new Tippett work, twelve months after its Houston premiere.
