Casts are as advertised, as reviewed in the Glasgow Herald (Nov 9 and 16), and confirmed by programme for Nov 21 in NLS, 26 November in Edinburgh Central Library and 7 and 14 November in the Mitchell.

Many of the leading singers of the day kept roles from Faust in their repertoire - with an embryonic great dramatic mezzo such as Louise Kirkby Lunn here touring as Siébel. The tenors Hedmondt and Brozel could sing just about anything. Perhaps most noteworthy of all is the range of voices willing to play the devil. Winckworth was a bass, Ludwig a Wagnerian bass-baritone, while Alec Marsh generally sang higher baritone parts.

It is interesting also to see the company's German maestro happy to conduct a work that was generally regarded with contempt in Germany because of its light treatment of Goethe's masterpiece.
