It was difficult to identify quite what was wrong with this revival - just a lack of atmosphere. The tall American baritone James Johnson completely dominated the stage when he was visible (just as he would make a fearsome bodyguard when he returned as Kurwenal the following year). Penelope Chalmers, though a late replacement, also made a generally positive impression.
