Elisabeth Söderström gave very few performances of opera in Scotland, so it was rather pleasing that Brian McMaster and Richard Armstrong, with whom she had worked in Wales, were able to bring her to Edinburgh for her operatic farewell. All the potential difficulties of the work - sentimentality, bathos, whatever, were successfully overcome in a masterly reading. The first half of the evening was a similar event, with the great Italian buffo baritone Claudio Desderi conducting and singing in Cimarosa's charming little rarity Il Maestro di Capella.
