Mr J W Turner, formerly a principal tenor with Carl Rosa, followed the example of several colleagues following the maestro's death, and left to set up his own company. He toured successfully for the next decade, travelling north of the central belt annually. The repertoire consisted of British operas - the works of Balfe, Wallace and Macfarren, plus Martha (regarded as British in light of its subject), and the perennial favourite Faust.
