Claudio Dsederi was one of the great buffo performers of recent times, but was also recognised as a conductor and teacher of note. Nothing could therefore be more appropriate than that he should make his Festival farewell on the podium, on stage, facing the audience, with a responsive band gathered round him happy to be criticised as part of the show. It was a delightful half-hour, and was followed by another farewell, that of Elisabeth Söderström in La voix humaine. The only pity was that both singers so rarely sang opera in Scotland during their active careers.
