On its first Edinburgh visit back in 1991, the Kirov brought all Musorgsky's operas, though only one of them, Khovanshchina, was staged in the Playhouse. By 1995 the Festival Theatre was up and running, so the company brought two fully staged operas by Rimsky-Korsakov, in Sadko and The Invisible City of Kitezh. Why Ruslan only received a concert performance we do not know, but at least this cast was just about ideal, and the long work was only subjected to one or two minor cuts.
