Turner's repertoire had always concentrated on the vocally more lyrical section of the repertoire. The tenor role in Trovatore was of a more dramatic nature than Turner himself would ever tackle, and he now started to programme other heavy works - Cavalleria Rusticana, Pagliacci, even Tannhäuser. Perhaps the failure in popularity of the British school of works had reached a stage that could no longer be ignored.
