While the Carl Rosa had decided several years before that Cav and Pag belonged together, Turner was still experimenting. On this occasion the filler was a frothy entertainment in the shape of the first half of Donizetti's Daughter of the Regiment. Later in the visit, Pagliacci would be accompanied by a more serious work, the final act of Trovatore (already performed in its entirety earlier in the run).
