Read more about the opera Merry Widow

One of the most successful productions of the new Carl Rosa operetta company was this lively and unpretentious staging of The Merry Widow, here on its second visit to Scotland in less than a year, though with an almost entirely new, and equally accomplished, team of performers.

Margaret Preece had sung in the Scottish Opera Chorus several years before, but her only major role in Scotland had been with ETO in Perth. As with that Rosalinde she again showed a real flair for the dialogue required of Hanna, and sang beautifully. The young Canadian tenor David Curry had earlier been a nicely lyrical Camille, and here turned on the charm in his first attempt at Danilo.
