The world première of Hamish MacCunn's successful opera derived from Scott. Its initial success did not last, and it has rarely been revived since the First World War. The composer conducted the first performance, though, it seems, not the second. The company conductors on this tour were Luigi Arditi, Cllaude Jacquinot and Gustave Slapoffski - which of them conducted on Saturday is yet to be discovered, though the last was certainly involved with the production.
The cast is derived from a programme in the National Library of Scotland (NLS) collection. A programme also survives in the Mitchell Library (21 November).
