Tristan und Isolde (Act II) 2012BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra (BBC SSO)

The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under that world famous Wagnerian, Donald Runnicles, continued their remarkable act-by-act compilation of Tristan spread over the season. It seems that there is perhaps one reason to justify this method of performance - all the artists, knowing that they are to be spared the superhuman exertions of the last act, can for once hold nothing back, with shattering effect. Robert Dean Smith, already a Bayreuth Tristan, and scheduled for Act III, stood in for the originally booked Ian Storey. Nina Stemme returned, and the Mark, Peter Rose, was by now an infrequent visitor to Scotland.

The prelude to this act, to justify that any such thing could be desirable, was the fascinating pairing of music from the Berlioz dramatic symphony Romeo and Juliet.
