Louise Welsh's taut libretto was just the right piece to allow Stuart MacRae to bring out a keen sense of the uneasy atmosphere required, along with an element of period pastiche and a frightening finale. Altogether a remarkable quarter-hour, beautifully judged, with excellent performances from the trio of soloists.
This pairing were deservedly commissioned to produce a more substantial work to be performed by Scottish Opera and Music Theatre Wales - with a premiere at the 2012 Edinburgh Festival.
