The Carl Rosa rather neglected Viennese operetta, giving brief exposure to two works, one by Suppé, and here, the most famous piece by Millöcker, which still retains popularity in Austria. It received two performances in 1884, and a further one the following year, which does not suggest that it enjoyed any great success. However the title role was taken by Ben Davies - evidence that this young tenor's career was taking off.
A minor footnote concerning the translation is the use of the name Stephania for the younger daughter - presumably the original Bronislava was thought more awkward than it seems now.
