Read more about the opera Indian Queen

Purcell’s last semi-opera is rarely performed, perhaps because some of the music is believed to have been added by his brother after his death. even so, it does contain much excellent music, some of which has become popular as individual items in recital.

Set in the royal courts of Peru and Mexico just prior to the arrival of the Spanish Conquistadors, The Indian Queen is an intricate tale of dynastic power, which provides an exotic and alluring masque.

Following the success of their performance of The Fairy Queen in 2009, Harry Christophers and The Sixteen returned to the Usher Hall to give an excellent performance of this rarity.
