Boito's version of the Faust story has always struggled to compete with Gounod's more obviously popular version. After this tour, the Carl Rosa would put it away for a quarter century. The company never really fielded the spectacular choral forces required for the impressive prologue and epilogue.
Nevertheless, this team, with Marie Roze doubling Margherita and Helen of Troy, backed up by William Ludwig and Barton McGuckin, gave it a good chance.
