These semi-staged performances gave the impression of being thrown together rather hurriedly, without any particular justification. András Schiff has conducted little in Britain, and the Philharmonia does not visit Edinburgh as often as it used to, so those were points of interest. The singers were largely unfamiliar up-and-coming, including the recent Cardiff winner as Fiordiligi. The sterling exception was the veteran Rolando Panerai - perhaps not much voice left, but still able to put over a performance half a century after his recording of Guglielmo with the same orchestra under Karajan.
