At this time the work of amateur companies was of far greater significance than in recent years.
The enterprise of Glasgow Grand at this time, in putting on rarities such as The Trojans and Idomeneo (both British premieres) is well recorded.
However Edinburgh Grand also had a taste for the unusual, mounting pieces such as Prince Igor and The Queen of Sheba, as well as little-known French works including Hérodiade and, the following year, Le Cid.
Further dates to be added.
