Performances of Wagner’s operas, even in concert form, are now rare outside the Edinburgh Festival. Donald Runnicles had a high reputation for his Wagner interpretation, and once conducted Lohengrin in an Edinburgh Festival concert, so it was appropriate that he should include the first act of Walküre, with a notable cast, in his first season with the BBC Scottish Symphony. The concert programme began with the violin concerto of Sibelius, an interesting coupling.
The Glasgow performance was preceded by a discussion led by the well known Scottish broadcaster (and opera fan) James Naughtie.
