Anthony Besch's 1966 Albert Herring was the first production that Scottish Opera toured abroad (to Florence in May 1968). In October 1970 it was taken in the opposite direction, to the National Theatre in Reykjavik. This time his new staging of Turn of the Screw also went. On returning to Britain, Herring was given two more performances in Newcastle (and Screw just one). By this time, the performers could almost be described as the 'Scottish Opera Repertory Company', so well did they work together.
