Wallace's most famous opera had disappeared from the professional repertoire with the Second World War, but it still lingered fitfully among amateur performers, if not for much longer.
Here, the most notable features of the revival were the fact that Glasgow Grand hired the local professional band, together with its chief conductor, and gave further opportunity to an apprentice director in the form of Peter Ebert. They collaborated on both works this week, with Nabucco playing on alternate nights. Ebert seems to have resisted any temptation to redirect either of these pieces in his later career with Scottish Opera.
