Verdi's first popular hit has never caught on with professional performers in Scotland. Only the Ellen Kent company originating in Moldova has toured it here recently. It has therefore been left to the amateur operatic societies in the cities (at least Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dundee) to keep it alive.
Here, the local professional orchestra and their resident conductor were joined by a professional baritone from Covent Garden to sing the title role. They, and the chorus of 65, were licked into shape by young director Peter Ebert, many years before the foundation of Scottish Opera.
This week the Society was also giving its final performances of a hugely popular work of the past, Wallace's Maritana.
