Glasgow Grand here continued its fine tradition of unearthing rare works that contain thoroughly enjoyable music. This week, Le roi d'Ys, receiving its Scottish premiere, alternated with performances of Carmen.

Peter Ebert, who had directed the productions in 1951 and 1952, had now moved on, but was succeeded by another important face of the future, in Anthony Besch, who was also spending his summers as an assistant to Carl Ebert at Glyndebourne.
