Pirates of Penzance 1882Mr R D'Oyly Carte's Opera Company

Read more about the opera Pirates of Penzance

After two successful visits to the central belt theatres, Pirates at last went further north, to cities where The Sorcerer and HMS Pinafore were already popular favourites. The cast included Alice Aynsley Cook,  from a family more readily associated with the Carl Rosa company. On this tour, the curtain-raiser played to get the audience prepared for the main work was a frivolous but successful little operetta called Mock Turtles.

This cast is taken from The Comet, a 'Theatrical Programme and Critical Journal' of Dundee Theatre Royal (in Dundee City Library's Lamb Collection). Each theatre on the tour provided its own sets, either taken from existing stock, or made new by the resident scene painter. Costumes would be brought by the touring management.

Further Scottish dates to be added.
