Read more about the opera Iolanthe

When Iolanthe went out on tour, a notable feature of this cast was the presence of Alice Barnett in the dominating role of Fairy Queen. This was the first instance when the creator of a major part in London had then been seen elsewhere. In Barnett's case, this was because of an extensive period of illness. Her position in the London cast was taken by her cover, Rosina Brandram, who quickly attained star status. Brandram created the contralto parts in all the subsequent G & S works. When she recovered her health, Alice Barnett was unable to get her old job back.

Cast from The Comet in the Lamb Collection of Dundee City Library.

Further Scottish dates to be confirmed.
