Mikado 1898Mr R D'Oyly Carte's Opera Company

Read more about the opera Mikado

By this time the D'Oyly Carte managed to bring a range of G & S works to the major cities. This tour was unusual in that the popular favourites were augmented with a production of Utopia Limited.

The week in Dundee began with The Mikado (sure to be a sell-out even on a Monday). The other works followed thus: Tue, Gondoliers; Wed, Pirates of Penzance; Thu, Patience; Fri, Utopia Limited; Sat, Yeomen of the Guard. As usually happened with touring opera companies, the rarity was programmed for the Friday evening. This was partly to encourage a good-sized audience for a work the public didn't know, but also to provide the theatre band with the time to get to know an unfamiliar score.

Other tour venues to be confirmed.
