Rodelinda has been one of the most frequently revived of Handel's operas in modern times. It is all the more surprising then that this seems to have been only its second appearance in Scotland. This was also the only occasion so far when the Dublin-based Handel specialists, the Opera Theatre Company, appeared in Scotland, though several personnel have subsequently worked with English Touring Opera.
The simply staged production of Rodelinda was musically and dramatically of a very high standard, though there were, almost inevitably, a number of cuts in the text. The most significant excision was the entire role of Bertarido's loyal friend, Unulfo, some of whose arias were re-allocated between Eduige and Grimoaldo.
