Around this time, the tradition established by Glasgow Grand was to mount a rarity on alternate nights with a standard repertoire item. In this case the rarity was a contemporaneous French work, Le roi d'Ys by Lalo, receiving its Scottish premiere. Both works allowed young novice director Anthony Besch, an assistant at Glyndebourne, some useful directing experience. The Carmen, Winifred Busfield, would later be a notable teacher at the RSAMD.
