On this tour, The Waterman was given as an afterpiece following Lucia, then repeated as the final item of the three-week Dundee visit, following the Saturday evening rendering of Maritana. On the 1870 tour, with a near-identical cast, it followed Lucrezia Borgia, La Sonnambula or The Barber of Seville.
The practice of selecting an afterpiece seems to have had little logic to it. Indeed most evenings concluded with a brief concert of arias and ensembles, by the evening's 'star' soloists, presumably favourite 'encore' pieces for those soloists. These are rarely discussed, and it may be assumed that the critics, with deadlines for their copy, would have been on their way up Reform Street before the first aria began.
