Balfe was still the most successful living British composer at this stage, though he had produced no new opera for several years and would be dead within a few months. The Rose of Castille lasted in the repertoire longer than any piece other than Bohrmian Girl, and the plot is a rather more logical one than that much criticized work can boast.
Now that several operas from this much neglected area have received good recordings, perhaps this should be next on the list.
