Donizetti's serious operas were clearly quite popular at this time, and it would appear that in this work it was not the title role, but that of the tenor, that was considered the most prominent part. The company's principal tenor, William Parkinson, having appeared on every night of an arduous three-week season, duly took his benefit in this part.
