Britten's second Canticle can make a powerful effect simply in concert form, but there seems to be no reason why it should not be staged. On this occasion, as part of Ledlanet's triple-bill, it was the distinctly serious meat in the sandwich. Eiko Nakamura made a slightly-built, suitably boyish interpreter of Isaac. The evening began with another hybrid work, in Bach's Coffee Cantata. After the dinner interval, the audience was treated to a delightful piece of Gilbertian froth, in the form of Gentleman's Island, by Joseph Horovitz.
