This Italian language production, entitled Caterina, ossia I diamanti della corona, gave the work its first outing in Glasgow, over thirty years after the premiere. Within only a few weeks it was to return, this time in English, and under Carl Rosa auspices. One disadvantage of the Italian edition was that, as with later French works such as Carmen and Tales of Hoffmann, the sharp spoken dialogue was replaced with ponderous recitatives.
One of the most notable performers in this cast is the Belgian bass Agnesi, whose career was sadly brief - he died the following February in London, aged only forty-two.
