Idomeneo, Re di Creta 1934Glasgow Grand Opera Society

Read more about the opera Idomeneo, Re di Creta

This British premiere of one of Mozart's greatest works, little-known at the time, was just one of the momentous achievements of Glasgow Grand during its peak years, under the guidance of Erik Chisholm. The orchestra was largely professional, drawn from the Scottish Orchestra, augmented with players brought up from London. The leader of the band was a highly reputable figure, David McCallum.

The visual side - sets, costumes, choreography and the actual dancing, were all in the hands of staff and students of Glasgow School of Art.

Idomeneo was played in conjunction with a revival of the previous year's great success, The Bartered Bride details here.
