Glasgow Grand had only done The Pearl Fishers once before, in 1950 when it was the rarity performed in tandem with Carmen. This time it was partnered with another relative rarity in Lucia di Lammermoor, recently restored to respectability by Callas and Sutherland.
This cast is particularly notable for the young tenor appearing as Nadir. John Robertson was to be involved with Scottish Opera from the outset and would enjoy a lengthy professional career with the company.
The Scottish National Orchestra had been in the pit for Glasgow Grand performances for decades past, but their increasingly busy schedule would soon make this impossible, not least because June 1962 saw them play for the first performances of Scottish Opera, in Madama Butterfly and Pelléas et Mélisande.
