For a third year running, Glasgow Grand only mounted a single opera, and that was one of the most traditionally popular pieces imaginable. It was also in the repertoire of Scottish Opera, unlike the chosen works in the previous two years, Faust and Carmen. It therefore seems an odd choice, but this must reflect the sad reduction in the number of performers available, even if the major roles could be double-cast. The men's chorus, in particular, down to eight singers, was only a fraction of the substantial group available for Samson and Delilah three years before
