Glasgow Grand's 1950 week was billed as a Bizet Festival, with performances of Carmen alternating with a rarity, The Pearl Fishers. In terms of future fame, Sir John Pritchard is the most notable name, right at the outset of a career which quickly took him to the heights. The review in Opera mentions none of the singers here, and gives no information at all on Carmen. Only two of the singers are credited in The Scotsman.
This rather indicates a lack of enthusiasm for the work, but Glasgow Grand did have another go at it a dozen years later. It has featured reasonably often in the programmes of amateur companies since then, and Scottish Opera have also dusted it down from time to time.
