This may have been the last appearance of Maritana in Scotland. It was performed by an amateur team in repertoire with a rarity of equal vintage in Verdi's Nabucco. The Verdi featured two guest professionals in William Dickie and David Ward, as well as young conductor Alexander Gibson, all coming home from London for the occasion.
One textual note for the record is the fact that a decision was taken to help amateur performers who might struggle with the dialogue. Thus the company used the recitatives composed by Tito Mattei for the Italian version employed by Mapleson's company.
