In a week-long season of opera, Pagliacci was mounted for a single performance as a vehicle for star Scottish tenor Joseph Hislop, with the support of conductor John Barbirolli. Neither took part in the first part of the evening, a performance of Gluck's Orfeo. They joined up on the Monday and Saturday for La bohème. The other four slots during the week were devoted to the premiere of The Bride of Dionysus by Professor Donald Tovey.
As with the Puccini performances, Hislop sang in Italian, while all around him the performance was given in English.
