Come and hear a talk about Wagner's use of horns, illustrated by musical examples! Professor Arnold Myers and Dr Lisa Norman talk on Wagner's brass instruments for The Ring, especially his tenor and bass Wagner tubas but also including his brass trumpet, contrabass trombone, and contrabass tuba. There will be slides, CDs and at least one live instrument.
Professor Arnold Myers completed his doctorate at the University of Edinburgh with research into acoustically based techniques for taxonomic classification of brass instruments. He has contributed articles to the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians and has published extensively on brass wind history. He is a research fellow at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and Curator Emeritus of the Edinburgh University Collection of Historical Musical Instruments.
Dr Lisa Norman has recently completed a PhD at the University of Edinburgh on early orchestral horn technique, and has had her research on the history and acoustics of the Wagner tuba published in the Galpin Society Journal. She teaches horn and recorder to local Edinburgh schoolchildren, and in her spare time - as well as enjoying hill walking - she is attempting to master the early orchestra horn.
